Collecting Logo Golf Balls????? Why would anyone collect logo balls. That was my thoughts for years. I would go into a pro shop pay for my round and see a jar full of golf balls with the logo of the course I was playing and think why. That all changed one day.
Walking out of the pro shop at World Woods on a sunny day in 1994, my friend Ed Kin tossed me a Titleist golf ball and said “hey you should start collecting these”. I looked at the ball and on it was a logo of World Woods. I did not think much about it at the time. I put the ball in my bag and continued on my way to play Pine Barrens. Later, when I got home from the golf trip, I placed the World Woods logo ball in my closet on my wire shelving and moved on.
A funny thing happened the following week. When I walked into the pro shop of my home club at the time,Heritage Golf Club in Hilliard, Ohio, I saw the jar of logo balls. This time I put my hand in the jar and bought one. The power of suggestion. Today, my collection has grown to over 600 golf logo balls. It is a drop in the bucket to some of the more larger collectors. The reasons for collecting vary. I collect only from courses I have played ( except for a few from each of the companies I have worked for.) Others will collect any and every ball they can find with a marking/logo on it.
An internet search for largest logo golf ball collection will result in many stories including this one about Don Thompson from Wisconsin. His collection totaled over 15,000 logo golf balls before his passing in 2018.
The Guinness book of world records states the largest logo ball collection is owned by Ted Hoz with over 74,849 logo golf ball. The internet is filled with stories of people collecting logo golf balls. The next question is how do you display them.
Wood, Plastic, glass fronts, no front cover. 25 balls, 49 balls, 72 balls. Golf ball display rack come in all shapes and sizes. Are you a beginner collector? Are you a more serious collector? I started with a simple 9 x 8 72 count display rack. I found it at the local golf shop and it worked well. Playing 10-15 new courses a year this first logo golf ball display case took a few years to fill up.
As I started to to travel more and play more I added a 2nd display case then a 3rd and a 4th until I got eight display rack on my wall. At that point I had a mis mash of different type and styles of display rack. All 72 ct but different types of wood. At this point I decided to build my own so I would have consistency and a uniform looks. The picture to the left shows my work.
No matter what type of collector your are, I personally have found collecting logo golf balls to a great part of my golf journey.
